Minecraft is an innovative game of survival and creation, in the sense that we can modify our world, our environment, and create whatever we want in total freedom. While the game's graphics are naturally beautiful, they remain fairly simple in the end. There's plenty of scope for improvement and change, with the many resources available on the Internet. That's where Iris Shaders comes in.

Iris Shaders is an open-source mod created by Coderbot and IMS, which shakes up the world of shaders, previously owned by Optifine. Their aim is to make shaders more accessible to all, more powerful, with a simple modern design and compatible with all mods, all for free. Updates are also very regular and available very quickly after the release of a new version of Minecraft.

The Iris Shaders project

Coderbot explains the reasons for his project very clearly :

“Iris was created to fill a void I saw in the Minecraft customization and graphics enhancement community: the lack of an open source shader mod that would allow me to load my favorite shader packs onto modern versions of the game, while maintaining performance and mod compatibility. OptiFine, the current dominant mod for using shader packs, has a restrictive license that firmly opposes any kind of tinkering, and is quite notorious for having compatibility issues with the mods I like. It's also mutually incompatible with Sodium, the best rendering optimization mod in existence by far. ShadersMod was never updated after 1.12, and it doesn't support many of the many popular modern shaderpacks. So I created Iris to try and solve these problems, and also to solve many other long-standing problems with shader packs.

Above all, I developed Iris to meet my own needs for a performance-oriented shader mod with good compatibility and tinkering potential. Iris, when combined with Sodium, delivers excellent performance on my machine, finally allowing me to play with shaders instead of periodically turning them on to take pretty screenshots, then turning them off once I'm tired of the frame drops. Of course, it turns out that I'm far from the only person who wants to benefit from the development of Iris, so I've decided to make it public as an open-source mod.

Iris has a stable public release for versions 1.16.5, 1.17.1, 1.18.2, 1.19 which must be installed with Sodium. Iris is still in full development and benefits from new improvements every week, and is progressing very rapidly!”

Advantages & differences

- Excellent compatibility with the vast majority of mods.
- Easy to update and available free of charge.
- The mod is open-source, so the community can contribute in collaboration with the creators.
- Iris is Optifine's direct competitor. The number of supported shaderpacks is constantly and rapidly increasing.
- Iris is compatible with the Sodium and Phosphor optimization mods (from CaffeineTM), which deliver stunning, beautiful graphics for a unique gaming experience.

Features

- Iris uses Shadow Frustum Culling, a technique that reduces the high impact of shader shadows, preserving and significantly increasing FPS.
- Entity rendering (objects, mobs, etc.) is also improved. This means you can improve your performance by 60% (compared with Minecraft Vanilla), without even using shaders. Accessible and practical.
